For those of you who don't happen to watch the ticker on our gallery home page as it clicks off number of widgets served (what, you aren't completely glued to it the way I am???? that's odd), I wanted to proudly announce that we passed a major landmark this week - we have now served over a billion widgets.
What does this mean, exactly, you ask? Well, we only count a widget as "served" when it is fully viewed by a web page visitor off our domain. In fact, anytime we serve a widget via flash, we don't even load it on the page until someone has scrolled down to where it lives. Each time a Widgetbox widget is viewed out in the wild, this counts as one widget served. That's the only way this number grows, and we are really proud of and excited about the massive and fully organic growth we have seen over the last year and a half since we started widgetizin'.
Just to fill out the story a bit, these billions of widgets served sit on over 170,000 domains across the Internet. MySpace, Facebook, all the biggies - these count as just one domain each. These widgets served represent the nearly 30,000 widgets that over 21,000 developers have submitted to Widgetbox, and these numbers are all growing exponentially, all the time.
In general, it's a pretty exciting time to be in the widget space, I gotta say. We fully believe that widgets will transform the Internet completely (and in fact are already), and we are totally fired up about being a part of that transformation, along with all of you!
Many congrats to the entire Widgetbox team, who have worked tirelessly to make this awesome milestone possible.
