After realizing initial success with his website, Steve wanted to further increase his web presence. His immediate marketing goals were to: create a social media presence, increase search engine optimization (SEO), increase brand awareness, and drive additional traffic to the website.

Steve decided to work with Widgetbox to implement a comprehensive—yet affordable—marketing strategy that would accomplish his objectives.

The solution was to create a blog widget, or Blidget, for his "Experiment of the Week" RSS feed and YouTube channel. A branded header and footer were also added to the widget to increase brand awareness. To assist with SEO, the widget included an HTML/SEO wrapper with the search term "science toys". The inclusion of the SEO/HTML wrapper guaranteed that every reinstall of the widget on the web would include the relevant search terms with a link back to Steve’s site.

Finally to increase Steve’s social media presence, Widgetbox created a custom Facebook Fan Page that would distribute the brand through the Facebook platform.

An initial six months of promoting the ad on Widgetbox.com led to impressive results. SteveSpanglerScience.com increased from number 17 to 3 for Google search results for the term "science toys". A total of 360,000 unique impressions were served across 150+ unique URLs leading to 2,700 clicks to the site, and currently the widget is receiving 60,000 views a month—all displaying the brand’s image and feed content.

As for the show itself, reviews were relatively mixed. Us Weekly gave the following recap:

Conan O’Brien made his Tonight Show debut Monday — but critics weren’t exactly roaring with laughter.

“After one show, let’s say he’s a work in progress,” wrote Randee Dawn of The Hollywood Reporter. “O’Brien commanded the stage, but seemed more comfortable laughing it up with erstwhile sidekick-turned-announcer Andy Richter than in interacting with his 380 audience members.”

O’Brien’s opening monologue mostly consisted of “sketch upon sketch” — notes New York Post TV critic Linda Stasi — most of which were “at times, painfully unfunny.”

In one scene, O’Brien — who spent the last 17 years as host of NBC’s Late Night — was shown jogging across the country from New York to Los Angeles. “I think I’ve timed this move perfectly,” he quipped. “I’m on a last-place network, I moved to a state that’s bankrupt and The Tonight Show is sponsored by General Motors.”

We assume Conan will find his stride (the question is when and will the audience bear with him in the meantime)!
